the structure of social media, in its present form, makes silence all but impossible. speech and other forms of noise, it magnifies immensely, to fill the available space. deliberate not-talking, in contrast, is almost invisible.
are you thinking to yourself, that's inevitable, that's the meaning of silence? it's not. silence in physical gatherings can be extremely powerful.
we don't know how, exactly, social media might be restructured to make silence more important. we know, now, that we want it to be.
